Slut-shaming A frequent topic relating to Rape Culture. The word ‘slut’ is utilized by society to degrade women such as for their sexual behaviors and/or for the way they dress that go against norms. “At a societal level, women continue to be told not to ‘dress like sluts’ or they're inviting rape, which perpetuates the very dangerous myth that the way a woman dresses encourages rape and continues the habit of blaming the victim instead of the perpetrator" source |

This is a very prevalent issue here in the Philippines that struggles to be resolved.
This country is very traditionalist and religious; you don't need sources for that, it's practically obvious. And once something or someone contradicts beliefs and morals that hold being conservative at a high regard, it is already or automatically deemed disgraceful. I myself grew up surrounded by the idea that if a girl wears revealing/body-hugging/short clothing, she is labeled a "slut". I grew up believing that if a girl sleeps/flirts with several people, she is considered a "whore". And I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.
Most Filipinos have been brought up to think like this, whether consciously or subconsciously, because this is what we were taught; by the media, our parents, strangers, teachers, friends, and society in general. Although I understand that everyone has their own opinion and whatnot, I don't think it's still right to shame a woman for just because she doesn't fit within your beliefs. Get what I mean?
I think we have to imprint in ourselves that someone's worth does not decrease because of the sexual decisions and clothing choices that person makes. We shouldn't be so quick to judge others. It's practically none of our business anyways.
I've been wanting to write about this issue for a while, but I've been very busy with college and other stuff so this is quite short. Also, I'm not saying that I've never contributed to slut-shaming, that would just be hypocritical. However, I am doing my best to be constantly careful and aware with what I say.
The first step in changing your mindset to a more positive progressive one is to practice thinking differently.
